Eye bags! We all suffer from them. Whether it’s the result of too much screen time, a weekend Netflix binge, or a big night out, we feel your pain…

However, the severity of eye bags isn’t solely due to external influences. Age, genetics, health conditions, medication, and more can all cause the problem to intensify.  While there are many so-called “home fixes” to reduce the condition (cold tea bags, anyone?), the best way to get rid of eye bags is with a carefully crafted approach.

How to Get Rid of Eye Bags (or how to not get them in the first place…)

  • What eye bags are and why do we get them?
  • Simple remedies to reduce the appearance of eye bags

What eye bags are and why do we get them?

Bags beneath the eyes appear when the structures that hold the thin tissue in place begin to break down. As we get older, we naturally produce less collagen and elastin—the elements that plump and bring the beauty of young skin. This happens in conjunction with other natural aging processes, such as fluid and or fat migrating and pooling there.

It’s not just the passing years—other factors also come into play, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Certain types of medication
  • Lifestyle choices, including smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Allergies
  • Fluid retention
  • Lack of sleep

Simple remedies to reduce the appearance of eye bags

There are many steps you can take to help reduce their appearance. These include:

  • Use cool compresses on the eye area (be careful not to place very cold materials directly onto the skin).
  • Reducing your salt intake (salt increases fluid retention)
  • Giving up (or not starting) smoking.
  • Reducing alcohol consumption.
  • Controlling allergies.
  • Improve sleep habits. Try to get enough sleep and sleep with your head slightly raised.
  • Reduce the amount of liquid you consume before bed.
  • Use cosmetics to hide their appearance.

Getting Rid of Eye Bags: Aesthetic and More Invasive Treatments

  • The non or minimally invasive approach
  • More invasive measures

The non or minimally invasive approach

There are a variety of non-invasive treatments that can effectively help get rid of eye bags. Carried out correctly, the following options (or, perhaps, a combination of options) can have excellent results.

  • Fillers and injectables: Careful filler placement can help restore natural plumpness under the eyes. Neuromodulators (of which there are many) can reduce the movement of the sagging skin structure. Sometimes both products might be needed.
  • Laser resurfacing: This removes the top layers of skin, allowing the younger, less damaged surface to shine through. Non-Caucasians should approach such a solution with care. Poorly carried out treatments run the risk of permanently altering the skin color (hyper or hypopigmentation)
  • Chemical peels: Light to moderate chemical peels can be extremely successful in the treatment of eye bags. Again, these remove the top layers of the skin but don’t run the risk of hyper or hypopigmentation)

More invasive measures

Surgery is another option for more severe eyebags that don’t respond to less invasive measures. This is known as a blepharoplasty. The surgery is minor and usually carried out within the doctor’s office on an outpatient basis. A local anesthetic is administered so you won’t feel a thing.

Such a process can also be tailored to treat the upper eyelid as well, if necessary. Excess or droopy skin can also be tightened. Because this procedure is invasive, the recovery period involves the body healing from the trauma. Therefore, bruising, swelling, and some discomfort are to be expected. Full recovery takes up to eight weeks.

While a blepharoplasty is a definitive solution, be aware that natural aging will continue in the months and years afterward. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that eye bags will return, it does mean that your face will continue to evolve naturally.
