Spider veins can appear anywhere on the body, although they’re most commonly found on the legs and face. While not harmful, they can be unsightly, prompting many of us to wonder how to get rid of them.

Some home remedies can be effective for mild spider veins. However, for a more definitive approach, dermatologists use a variety of methods.

Three Ways to Prevent or Get Rid of Spider Veins

  • 1: How to prevent spider veins
  • 2: How to get rid of spider veins: home remedies
  • 3: How dermatologists get rid of spider veins

1: How to prevent spider veins

Even if you’ve already got a few spider veins, you can still take preventative action against more. This is mainly with positive lifestyle choices, including:

  • Taking regular exercise.
  • Not sitting or standing for long periods.
  • Not wearing tight clothes that restrict movement and/or blood flow.
  • Keeping a healthy weight.

2: How to get rid of spider veins: home remedies

If you’ve got mild spider veins, you can help stop them from getting worse by following the above prevention advice. You can also take further action which may help the appearance of the veins.

Wear compression stockings if you’re sitting or standing for extended periods (over 30 minutes).

  • Elevate your legs a few times per day.
  • Flex your feet and ankles regularly.
  • Adhere to medication regimes that have been prescribed by your physician.
  • Avoid long hot soaks in the bath.

3: How dermatologists get rid of spider veins

There are four methods that dermatologists use to get rid of spider veins.   These are sclerotherapy, laser light, endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The latter two are newer, cutting-edge treatments that work differently from the older types of spider vein treatments.

  • Sclerotherapy: This is where a special chemical is injected into the veins. Over time, this causes the walls of the veins to collapse and prevent any blood flow. Spider veins treated this way will gradually reduce and disappear. Visible improvement will be seen over the next 3-6 weeks, although you might need up to 3 treatments for complete success.
  • Laser treatment: This uses a laser light that can cause smaller veins to disappear almost immediately. Larger veins take anything from 1-3 months to clear. The technology works in a similar manner to sclerotherapy in that it causes the vein to gradually collapse.
  • EVLT: This advanced method of spider vein removal involves a local anesthetic to numb the area. A tiny incision is made, and a laser fiber is inserted into the vein. This causes the vein to heat up, collapse, and seal shut. Over the next few months, the treated vein will gradually disappear.
  • RFA: The process is similar to that of EVLT apart from that a tiny catheter is inserted into the vein. Instead of a laser, a radiofrequency is applied, which has the same effect. Again, results are seen over the following few months.

All of the above methods may well require more than a single treatment. Your dermatologist surgeon will examine your spider veins and determine which will work best. You might be given a combination treatment, especially if you have larger varicose veins to be treated at the same time.

No matter which way your spider veins are treated, you’ll likely have to wear compression socks for a few weeks afterward. However, there’s very little downtime and you should be able to return to normal activities either straight away or the next day.
