Masseter Botox gets its name from the area of the body it targets—the masseter (jaw) muscles. You might also hear the procedure called non-surgical jaw slimming or jaw reduction.

As the name suggests, Botox is the key ingredient. Many people are familiar with its use as an anti-aging product that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It works by temporarily paralyzing the tiny muscles beneath the surface of the skin, causing them to relax. Masseter Botox takes advantage of the same properties, stimulating the strong jaw muscles to ease and create a more pleasing facial outline.

What are the indications for Masseter Botox treatment?

There are many reasons why someone might consider Masseter Botox. The most common clinical reason is for those who grind their teeth or excessively clench their jaw—often during sleep. This condition is known as Bruxism.

Over time, this means the jaw muscles grow in strength and definition. Not only can this cause a more square or prominent jawline, but it can also be painful—a condition known as temporomandibular jaw syndrome (TMJ). Headaches are also another common symptom.

By injecting Botox into the area, the muscles become less tense, helping with both pain and appearance. Excessive chewing and/or only chewing on one side of the mouth can also cause masseter muscle tension and the associated increase in size.

These aren’t the only reasons for overdeveloped jaw muscles. Genetics often play a part, as does ethnicity.

No matter what the reason behind a large or square-shaped jaw, Masseter Botox treatment is usually appropriate for most people in good health. Of course, if there’s an underlying condition for excessive teeth grinding or clenching, Masseter Botox won’t treat this—it only helps the symptoms. It’s important to also work with your healthcare provider or dental professional to help address the root cause.

TMJ, for instance, isn’t solely caused by excessive grinding—it can have underlying causes, such as arthritis or trauma. While Masseter Botox might be an appropriate treatment, this should be determined after you’ve received an official diagnosis.

How does Masseter Botox work?

The majority of people who have Masseter Botox treatment either want to reduce a square jawline or make the jaw more symmetrical.

Botox is a botulinum neurotoxin—a naturally occurring protein that, when injected into a muscle, disrupts the signals of the surrounding nerves. This effectively makes the muscles relax and lasts for up to six months (in the case of masseter muscle treatment). This means that the muscle gradually decreases in size because it’s no longer being over-stimulated. Careful placement of the injections morphs the jawline into a more desirable V-shape.

Although the effect of Masseter Botox treatment is temporary, additional injections over time can, in the case of grinding and chewing, assist in habitual change over the longer term.

Masseter Botox FAQs

Some of the commonly asked questions about Masseter Botox include:

  • How long before I see results? It usually takes up to four to six weeks to achieve the desired result. While you’ll likely notice a difference a few days after your first treatment, it’s usual to need multiple sessions (anything up to four) although some people only require one or two. TMJ pain relief can be as quick as a few days.
  • How long does the treatment session take? After your initial consultation (where your suitability, expectations, and other aspects will be discussed) the actual treatment only takes around five minutes.
  • Is there any downtime after the injections? No, you can return to normal activities straight away.
  • Do Masseter Botox injections hurt? Your clinician will use a numbing cream before treatment. The needles are very fine and are tolerated well by most people. This means that, at worst, you’ll only experience some mild discomfort during your session. You may have some mild post-injection pain. This can easily be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if required.
  • Does Masseter Botox work for everyone with a square jaw? The treatment can only be used for a square jaw that’s defined by muscle. It’s not suitable for those with square jaw bones.
  • How long do the effects last? Anything from three to six months. It’s perfectly safe to have top-up treatments on an ongoing basis—indeed, it’s recommended for lasting results.
  • Are there any potential side effects? The most common are redness and swelling at the injection site, mild pain, and bruising. These generally fade within a few days. Much rarer side effects include a lop-sided smile or even unintentional drooling. Once again, these are usually temporary. For anyone who has excessive loose skin at the side of their face (jowls), Masseter Botox treatment may cause an increase in their appearance. This is because the over-enlarged masseter muscle has supported the skin and provided structure. As it reduces in size, the jowls become more noticeable. Serious side effects are extremely rare.
  • How can I make the effects of Masseter Botox last longer? Abstain from alcohol a few days before and after treatment. Don’t massage your face or have a facial for at least four hours post-injections. You should also remain upright during this time. In the longer term, ensure you stay hydrated, reduce UV exposure, and follow a healthy lifestyle. Very importantly, choose a highly trained, experienced practitioner and go for regular maintenance treatments.
  • What would mean I couldn’t have Masseter Botox? Contraindications include being pregnant or nursing, an allergy to cow milk protein, having any keloid scarring, or any type of neuromuscular disorder. This list isn’t exhaustive, and your consultant will take an in-depth history before determining if you’re a suitable candidate.
