Can Pollution Accelerate Skin Aging? What Houston Patients Should Know

Pollution and skin aging go hand-in-hand and, according to the 2025 American Lung Association State of the Air report, the Houston-Pasadena region ranks as number 7 in the highest polluted metropolitan areas in the US by ozone.

Houston, we have a problem…

Pollution and skin aging go hand-in-hand and, according to the 2025 American Lung Association State of the Air report, the Houston-Pasadena region ranks as number 7 in the highest polluted metropolitan areas in the US by ozone.

But, now for the good news! There are many things we can do to ensure the health of our skin. Accelerated aging from environmental skin damage is not something you just have to accept, and with a great skin care regime (and a little help from your favorite dermatologist), you can implement antioxidant skincare that kicks that pollution right outta the ballpark…

Houston Air and Skin Health (and anywhere else, for that matter…)

While we’re homing in on Houston’s latest pollution levels, adopting strategies to target pollution is relevant wherever you live—and cities in particular, because pollution is often higher in such areas.

This is because pollution, such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, can breach the skin barrier. This protective top layer of skin works tirelessly to prevent toxins from reaching the delicate structures below, but it’s not impervious to constant stresses.

We’ll talk a bit more about the simple steps you can take to help guard against the constant bombardment of pollution. But first, let’s talk about how it accelerates skin aging.

  • #1: Disrupting the skin barrier: As we’ve already mentioned, pollutants damage the integrity of this natural barrier. Once compromised, this allows moisture to escape, increases susceptibility to allergens, and—critically—allows harmful UV rays to penetrate deeper into the skin tissue.
  • #2: Oxidative stress: Pollutant exposure increases free radicals (harmful molecules that cause damage at DNA level), destroying the lipids and proteins that make up the cell membranes. Oxidative stress is the term for when there is an imbalance between the bad (free radicals) and the good (antioxidants), which disrupts cell function and can cause the  cells to die.
  • #3: Inflammation: Chronic exposure increases the risk of inflammation, which often first appears on the skin as redness, irritation, and breakouts.
  • #4: Pigmentation issues: Uneven skin tone and age spots are believed to be accelerated by pollutant exposure.
  • #5: Breaks down collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid: These are all essential for the vital framework that supports healthy skin. When you lose this, then guess what? The structure of the skin begins to fail prematurely, and problems like fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, dark circles, etc., begin to appear.

As well as accelerated aging, failing to protect your skin from pollution can increase outbreaks of skin conditions, like acne, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, and atopic dermatitis.

How to Protect Against Pollution and Accelerated Skin Aging

While we can’t stop exposure, we can adopt easy skincare steps to dramatically reduce the risk.

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse…

Just as you would wash your debris from your hands, removing it from your face and other exposed areas is key. Make it a morning and evening task, and gently, gently, softly, softly is key. In other words, use good quality cleansing products, make sure the water isn’t too hot, and dab at your face without scrubbing or pulling at the skin.

Use products that are rich in antioxidants

Such as vitamins A, C, and E, retinol (use with care), and niacinamide (vitamin B3). Choose moisturizers that suit your skin type and are designed to hydrate and strengthen your skin barrier. Speak to your dermatologist for the best advice on which to use.

Wear sunscreen

The words of Baz Luhrmann’s. “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” are as true today as they were when the song was released in 1999. UV rays alone play a huge role in accelerated aging. Add pollution into the mix, and this is further exacerbated, with increased risk of skin dehydration, sensitivity, inflammation, and skin cell breakdown that can make you look older than your years.
