Houston’s Hair Removal Revolution: how electrolysis is changing the game
At Bayou City Dermatology, we approach hair removal in a strategic and scientific manner. We know that it’s not a one-size-fits-all process. That’s why every treatment is bespoke to ensure the ultimate results.
With many other hair removal processes hitting the headlines over recent years, you’ll be forgiven for thinking that electrolysis is – well, so last century. However, thanks to the recent nothing-short-of-incredible leaps in technology, the process has once again become a serious player in the world of permanent de-fuzzing.
In fact, in certain cases, electrolysis can be more effective than any other option—and that includes both its effectiveness and value for money.
Electrolysis is Back…
- Electrolysis 2.0
- The science bit (how electrolysis works)
Electrolysis 2.0
Electrolysis is no longer a one-trick pony. There are three different kinds, each using a slightly different method to zap those unwanted hairs. They’re known as:
- Galvanic: This uses a direct current that moves between two poles in a single direction. It’s excellent for those coarse, hard-to-remove hairs as well as those who have hair follicles that are a little distorted.
- Short-wave diathermy (SWD): You might also hear this described as Radio Frequency, High Frequency, or Thermolysis. It differs from Galvanic by having an alternating current that moves back and forth between two poles. It’s the fastest form of electrolysis and uses a very low-intensity current.
- Blend: As the name suggests, this uses both the above methods to stop hair regrowth. It’s extremely effective and can be used in combination with the other two, depending on the quality and area of hair to be removed.
The science bit (how electrolysis works)
At its most simple, electrolysis passes a mild electric current down the shaft of the hair. Once it reaches the follicle, it destroys the ability for a new hair to grow. Therefore, once the hair in situ falls out, no further ones will be produced. However, the procedure isn’t 100%, as many people will tell you. In some cases, the follicle can regenerate to grow another hair.
If this happens, further treatments will be necessary and – over time – the follicle’s ability to incubate another hair will diminish. In most cases, if a hair hasn’t regrown after three months, then you can be sure that the follicle is now defunct.

- 3 reasons why you should change your allegiance to electrolysis
3 reasons why you should change your allegiance to electrolysis
Electrolysis is certainly coming back into fashion. The following are 3 standout reasons why this is happening.
- It’s permanent: Electrolysis is considered far more permanent than laser hair removal. Sure, both are effective, but once electrolysis has destroyed the follicle, then there’s no way that hairs can continue to grow from it.
- It’s more effective on certain parts of the body: In particular, the upper lip and the chin.
- It can be done during pregnancy or when you’re menstruating: This is not the case with laser hair removal.
Electrolysis is also suitable for all skin types, many people say that there’s less discomfort during the procedure, and it can be more effective than laser hair removal on certain parts of the body.
