These questions and many others are discussed below.
Dysport vs. Botox: Everything you need to know

What are Dysport Injections?
Dysport injections use an active ingredient known as a neurotoxic protein. The one contained in the product is derived from the botulinum toxin. While this might sound a little scary, rest assured that the procedure has undergone extensive testing and is approved by the FDA for treating wrinkles.
With Dysport, this approval means they can be used for correcting glabellar lines—the technical term for frown lines that are found between the eyebrows. They’re great for correcting moderate to severe wrinkles and work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles. When this happens, the lines become less apparent and the skin appears more youthful. Dysport injections can produce dramatic results that last for up to 4 months.
What are Botox Injections
Botox injections are very similar. They are derived from the same neurotoxin and also work by relaxing the facial muscles. Again, they’ve been extensively tested and are FDA approved. Botox can be used to target multiple areas, such as forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and laughter lines. Similarly to Dysport, the results last for up to 4 months.
Dysport vs. Botox: Putting them head-to-head
- Similar in nature but different in practice
Similar in nature but different in practice
From what we’ve gathered so far, the two products are very similar but can be used on different areas of the face. Experienced clinicians will often combine both products to achieve the best results, using Dysport to treat frown lines and Botox for other areas. Or they might use the two alternatively, with one treatment followed by the other in a few months’ time.
They both reduce wrinkles in the same manner, by relaxing and paralyzing the facial muscles so the skin becomes smoother.
The difference between the two can be summed up as follows:
- The trace proteins that make up the active ingredients differ slightly
- Dysport achieves results in a shorter time scale—typically within a couple of days. Botox, on the other hand, tends to take around a week to begin to work. But both achieve their peak results at around the 14-day mark.
- Botox is more potent than Dysport, meaning that treatment with the latter involves more product being used. However, because it’s cheaper for a unit of Dysport than a unit of Botox, both tend to end up costing the consumer a similar amount.
With 43 muscles in the facial area, specific targeting can create great results with injectables. There’s no age limit for adults—you can have either or both treatments, no matter how old you might be. Undergoing treatment is only minimally uncomfortable. This is because the needle used is extremely fine. When you have your initial consultation, your Botox/Dysport technician will first determine that there are no contra-indications to treatment and take a detailed history to understand what you expect from the results.
One of the most important aspects when it comes to great Botox and/or Dysport treatment is the skill of the person administering the injections. Placement directly impacts what’s achieved, so it’s important to only allow experienced clinicians who’re highly trained and up-to-date with the latest best practice.
That way you’ll get the results you crave and really be able to love the skin you’re in…
